dorkon-i prototype

The photo on the left is the USB circuit of the dorkon-i. The transient suppressor and current limiting resistors are on the back side of the board.

The photo on the right is the dorkon-i built without the USB circuitry and without the I/O header for the XBee.

dorkon-i

Microcontroller development board based on the ATmega168 microcontroller and MaxStream XBee Radio.

Feature Summary

  • ATmega168 running at 12MHz
  • MaxStream XBee Radio.
  • A/D reference supply is filtered (per Atmel specification)
  • Reset circuit (per Atmel specification)
  • Board can be cut to remove the XBee transceiver. Cut along the center of jumpers J4 and J7. To reuse the XBee portion of the board connect 3.3V to J7-4 and an FTDI TTL-232R-3V3 cable to the right half of J4.
  • Board size is approximately 4.4" x 1.7" (uC + XBee)
  • The board can be built with either a USB interface (FTDI FT232RL) or with a six pin header to accommodate an FTDI TTL-232R-3V3 Since the board runs off of 3.3V the 3V3 cable must be used
  • ICSP connector with 3.3V levels. This connector is 3x2 header with a 2mm pitch. An adapter board with level translation is required to interface to the standard 5V ICSP interface.

Power Supply

3.3V Operation (uC and Zigbee)

External Communication

  • FTDI 6 pin header with 3.3V levels
    • Use only an FTDI TTL-232R-3V3 cable.
    • uC TXD and RXD connects to either the XBee or the FTDI header.
  • ICSP with 3.3V levels. An adapter board with level translation is required in order to use the standard ICSP interface.

Interface Connectors

Two RA edge board headers for co-planar board mounting. Headers can be changed to vertical for parallel board mounting.
  • 26 pin RA header --- uC signals, +3.3V, input voltage (VBUS), GND
  • 10 pin RA header --- XBee signals, +3.3V, GND

Coming Soon

  • 2 cell to 3.3V DC-DC converter I will probably mount a battery holder and the DC-DC on the back.
  • Wall wart to 3.3V DC-DC converter.
  • Prototyping boards.
  • Pseudo-keyboard + LCD.

Features

  • The breadboard is apx 4.4" x 3.4".
  • Prototyping area has holes on 100mil centers. The pad layouts accommodate 300mil DIPs, 0805 resistors, SOICs with a pitch of 50mils (1.27mm) and SOT23-6 packages with a pitch of 0.95mm.
  • All of the pins from the dorkon-i 26-pin header are connected to Phoenix PT1,5 PVH-3,5 3.5mm pitch header as well as a 100mil pitch SIP header.
  • An LED for power and an LED wired to a test point
